Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists president seeks code of conduct for media

ISLAMABAD: President of Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) Pervez Shaukat has said that no society could develop without free press because it is fourth pillar of the state. Talking to state-run radio, he said that media strengthens democracy and provides information to the people. He said a country suffers whenever ban is imposed on media during dictatorship.

He added that they want a code of conduct for media because some people consider independence of media as their personal freedom. He said that no one is above the law. Shaukat said that PFUJ believed in responsible journalism. He said that elimination of yellow journalism is essential for strengthening the media. He said that journalists needed training. He added that owners should train its staff.

He said Interior Minister Rehman Malik promised him to form law to provide compensation for the affected journalists and it would be equal to a soldier.
