ISLAMABAD: Wife of an Indian minister died mysteriously in her hotel room in Delhi on Friday night after she accused a Pakistani journalist of having an affair with her husband, Shashi Tharoor, a well-known UN figure who returned to India and became a minister.

Mrs Sunanda Tharoor in her messages on Twitter had accused the Pakistani journalist, Mehr Tarar of Lahore, of sending love messages to her famous husband. But within hours she was found dead in her Delhi hotel room.

The bizarre story, which could mean the first death caused by a Twitter scandal, took the sinister turn after just 48 hours when Shahshi Tharoor became involved in a Twitter scam and claimed his account had been hacked.

The alleged hackers revealed that Shashi was having a love affair with a Lahore-based journalist Mehr Tarar who strongly denied having any clue.

Mehr Tarar reacted naturally on Friday night with a message on Twitter saying: “I just woke up and read this. I’m absolutely shocked. This is too awful for words. So tragic I don’t know what to say. Rest in peace, Sunanda.” In another message she said: “What the hell. Sunanda. Oh my God.”

The story exploded on the Indian media as Sunanda was found dead in Delhi. But the mystery grew as Sunanda had posted at least three very explicit messages on Twitter accusing Mehr Tarar of lying. She claimed she had emails and BBM messages from Mehr Tarar sent to her husband Shahsi. These three messages were sent less than 24 hours before Sunanda’s death in Delhi.

The messages were: “SunandaPTharoor @sptvrock 22h @rahulkanwal saw your show and must tell u the @mehrtarar has lied outright I have all her emails and her bbms to my husband. I don’t lie”

“SunandaPTharoor @sptvrock 21h @sptvrock @rahulkanwal @MehrTarar not just that I have her bbms to various other men in 2013 she is a woman I am ashamed to call one shame”“SunandaPTharoor @sptvrock 21h @sptvrock @rahulkanwal @MehrTarar my husband @ShashiTharoor &I are very happy so a Mehr isn’t going 2bother me all her lies on TV amused me”

Interestingly Mehr Tarar also replied to these messages on Twitter saying: “@MehrTarar 21h @sptvrock Delighted to hear that, Mrs T. Now get some rest. God bless. @rahulkanwal @ShashiTharoor” A copy of this message was sent to Mr Tharoor as well.

Indian YTV reported that there was no suspicious material found near the dead body of Sunanda and she was found lying on the bed with no injury or signs of any violence. The TV said it could be a natural death.
