Over 50 foreign channels list given to cable operators: Pemra

ISLAMABAD- Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) has drawn up a tentative list of foreign channels that can be shown by the cable operators, an official said.

He said the list was drawn up after series of complaints by customers that the cable operators were showing foreign channels that played indecent programmes, which did not conform to the cultural requirements of the Pakistani society.

The official said the list of more than 50 channels, which include news channels like BBC and CNN and entertainment channels such as HBO and Star Movies, has been handed over to the cable operators and which can be shown by them.

The channels not included in the proposed list would not be allowed to be shown by the cable operators, he said, adding the reason for forming the list was that only those were included to be shown which did not show nudity.

The official said the input from the cable operators was awaited and as soon as they came up with their suggestions, the list would be firmed up.

He said that Pemra would continue to keep boycott on Indian channels and any cable operator showing Indian channels would be proceeded against according to law.
