Over 130 IT awareness centres planned

KARACHI: Sindh Minister for Local Government Katchi Abadies and Spatial Development Muhammad Hussain Khan said on Friday that a comprehensive road map has been formulated for the promotion of information technology sector. Through this, more than 130 IT awareness centres (ITAC) would be set up across the province. This, he said during his visit to Kalpoint, a web portal providing detailed information on various issues and matters of daily life.

The minister said that Rs1.5 billion had been earmarked for the first phase of the IT sector project planning and 53 ITACs had been established so far. He added that 80 more centres were in pipeline and would be setup in the next three months. Muhammad Hussain said that the main objective of setting up ITACs is to provide basic computer training to the students, besides enabling them to clearly understand the language and terminology of the computers.

He said that students were being provided with free computer training at the ITACs through experts. Hussain was of the view that the computer and internet have become pivotal for better education and learning and observed that computer literates are being given priority in job market and if this trend persists, no one without computer Knowledge would be able to get any job after a few years. He said that in order to ensure effective routine work at the government office, record of all the provincial departments was being computerised. He added that in order to acquire feedback from the general public, many departments have established websites, which are also providing relevant information about them.
