Out-of-work butcher fatally beats wife

By Mohammad Asghar

RAWALPINDI: An out-of-work butcher, who has been pestering his wife for the last four years to get money from her family, finally beat her to death on Thursday, police said.

Aashi, mother of a two-year-old boy, was brought to the Holy Family Hospital (HFH) after Wednesday midnight by her husband, Qasir Butt, and her mother-in-law.

Doctors were operating upon the woman for a ruptured spleen and a fractured rib but she died of the injuries. The man was arrested soon after doctors pronounced the death.

Hospital staff said there were no visible torture marks on the woman’s body but police claimed Qaiser Butt had confessed beating his wife. Police would produce the suspect in the court on Friday to seek his remand.

Aashi tied the knot with Qaiser, one of her cousins, in 2006 but relations between the couple became sore soon after the marriage.

Mohammad Riaz, Aashi’s brother, had lodged a murder case against his brother-in-law, accusing him of torturing his sister to death.

In the FIR, Mr Riaz stated that since the wedding Aashi was being tortured by Qaiser, who asked her to get money from her parents. He even sold his wifeÂ’s gold jewellery.

According to the complainant, when he reached the hospital his sister was lying unconscious in the operation theatre. Qaiser told him that Aashi suffered injuries after falling down the stairs.

Mr Raiz said Chaudhry Basharat, owner of the house where the couple lived as tenants, told him that Qaiser kicked Aashi with full force and threw her into the street.

Inspector Shabeer Khan, who is leading the investigation, told Dawn that Aashi was unable to give any statement in the hospital. However, he quoted the four-year-old daughter of Mr Basharat as saying that “Auntie was beaten up by uncle.”
