Open policy on distribution of ads to newspapers

ISLAMABAD- The government strictly believes in freedom of the press and also endeavours to distribute official advertisements without any discrimination.

Minister for Information and Broadcasting Sheikh Rashid Ahmed said this while speaking at a meeting of Pakistan Editors Council (PEC) here on August 1, 2003. He noted that regional papers were not getting their due share and said his ministry would look into the matter.

There should be a comprehensive and open policy on the distribution of advertisements to the newspapers, Sheikh Rashid held and directed for computerisation of the record to ensure transparency. He said advertisements by the government were not being used to influence the papers or their policy adding that government believed and practised freedom of the press.

The minister said the government was not involved in the internal affairs of journalistic organisations and favour resolution of issues through mutual consultations. Chairman PEC Zia Shahid, Senior Vice-Chairman Zahid Malik and Secretary General Najam Sethi highlighted the problems being faced by the editors, particularly the regional press.
