Omar Shaikh’s counsel misquoted Musharraf, says spokesman

ISLAMABAD- A government spokesman, on Saturday, said that the defense counsel for Omar Shaikh, the main accused in the Daniel Pearl case, has misquoted President General Pervez Musharraf interview with German periodical ‘Der Speigel on the trial of Omar Sheikh.

Taking cognizance of the reported statement made by the defense counsel before the court in Karachi on Friday, the spokesmen said the president never told the periodical that he wanted the accused receive capital punishment.

Courts in Pakistan, the spokesman reminded, are free and decide cases on merit. “There can’t be a demand from anyone to proceed against an accused one way or the other. The claim is baseless,” the spokesman Stated.

He emphasized that President General Pervez Musharraf firmly believes in the sanctity of the law and wisdom of the courts of law to decide the legal matters in accordance with and purely on the merit of the case.

The spokesmen further said that the Pakistani courts were following a legal system, which is free and fair, and there is no mason to entertain any doubts about these in any manner.

He said Omar Shaikh was the main accused in the Daniel Pearl case and had been booked under relevant legal process by the authorities for committing a major crime.
