Old Ravians’ Mushaira depicts vulnerability of life

By Jonaid Iqbal

ISLAMABAD: The fourth annual Mushaira of the Old Ravians Association (ORA) was held at the Pakistan National Council of the Arts here on Saturday night.

Two eminent poets – Vice-Chancellor Karachi University Prof Dr Peerzada Qasim Raza and smile poet Anwar Masood – presided over the event that lingered on till about 2am on Sunday.

Several new poets also read their verses, as according to the compere and the general secretary of the association, Mumtaz Ahmad Sheikh, the format had been enlarged by inviting poets from outside Islamabad.

They were Bushra Farrukh (Peshawar), Rakhshanda Naveed (Lahore), Almas Shafi and Shah Zaki (Sialkot), visually-impaired poet Shahid Zaman (Kohat) and Taimur Hassan (Lahore).

Prominent poets such as Abida Taqi, Mehmooda Ghazia, Naureen Talat Aruba, Saima Ali as well as Ali Akbar Abbas, Farrukh Yar, Ghazanfar Hashmi, Hassan Raza, Haleem Qureshi, Mehbub Zafar, Manzar Naqvi, Muzaffar Mumtaz, Sermad Sehbai, Sarfraz Shahid, Shakeel Jazib, Tariq Naeem and Tauseef Tabassum represented the glamour of the federal capital.

Before the commencement of the Mushaira, each of the poets was presented with the shield of the association inscribed with its motto ‘Courage to know’.

The president of ORA said the ‘Courage to know’ also meant the courage to stay young because with functions such as the present one the old boys of the Government College, Lahore, felt they were still enjoying their days at the college ‘where it was bliss to be alive.’

The Mushaira, as usual, offered a cycle of poems expressing love and commenting on the vulnerability of life as reflected in the following verses:

Peerzada Qasim:Chiragh hun kab se jal raha hun/Mujhe duaon main yaad rakhye/Jo bujh geya tu sehar numa hun, mujhe yaad rakhye

Anwar Masood:Tabsere honge mere ahad main kaise kaise/Ek makhlooq thi meeras raven chhor gayee

Sermad Sehbai:Hisar hosh main khwabon ke dar reh gai hain/Koi raasta naheen hai aur safar reh gai hain

Haleem Qureshi:Ye kon bolta hai zaban kis ke pas hai/Bahri samayaton ka bian kis ke pas hai

Hassan Abbas Raza:Avargi may had se guzar jana chaiye/Lekin kabhi kabhar to ghar jana chahee

Shahid Zaman:Maan teri qabar se aati hui suntan hoon sada/Mujh maloom hai ke tu ab bhi doya kart hai

Abida Taqi:Qareeb ho ke phir tanha hai ek faasle par/Voh faslon ke tasalsal mein mere pas bhi rahe.
