Nine MPs to appear before ECP on fake degree charges today

* Cases will be forwarded to sessions judges if parliamentarians fail to show up

ISLAMABAD: Nine members of the Senate, National Assembly and provincial assemblies will appear before the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) today (Monday) over charges of possessing fake degrees.

The parliamentarians, including MNA Syed Muhammad Salman Mohsin, MNA Syed Javed Hasnain Shah, MPA Gulistan Khan, MNA Humayun Aziz Kurd, MPA Kishwar Kumar, Senator Mir Israrullah Khan, MPA Shamma Parveen Magsi, MPA Saima Aziz and MPA Khalifa Abdul Qayum Khan, had been asked to appear before the commission through the print and electronic media and letters had been written to them personally by the ECP. On the previous hearing on August 23, three members out of the six remained absent due to some reasons. “But, this time we have called them through the media and written letters to them on their addresses so no excuse is made to avoid the appearance,” Afzal Khan, the ECP spokesman told APP. Afzal is a joint secretary and a senior official deputed by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Justice (r) Hamid Ali Mirza to supervise the matter, on the directions of the Supreme Court of Pakistan.

“Those who will fail to appear before the commission to explain their positions, their cases will be forwarded to the sessions judges concerned to proceed further in light of the Supreme Court directives,” Afzal added.
