Newspaper offices security discussed

KARACHI- A team of the Task Force on Security of Newspapers, headed by Afaq Ahmed, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Interior, held a meeting with the representatives of APNS and discussed various matters pertaining to security concerns of newspapers.

After deliberations the meeting strongly recommended increased liaison between law enforcing agencies and newspaper organizations. It was proposed that newspaper offices will have one entry gate and, if possible, a walk through gate installed; ensure the availability of band scanner, metal detector and bomb disposal equipment keeping the size and nature of the premises in view, instal close circuit TV system to check the visitors and deploy private security guards whereas Law Enforcing Agencies (LEA) would provide necessary security backup.

It was decided that Law Enforcing Agencies would respond promptly to SOS calls from newspaper offices.

The meeting also discussed security risks to newspaper offices in Hyderabad and other places in interior of Sindh.

The APNS representatives referred to incidents of “mob attacks” at newspaper offices. The meeting took a serious view of the pointation and said serious consideration would be given to the safety and security of newspaper officies in such cases.
