Newsmen call off protest against Speaker

PESHAWAR, Sept 13: NWFP Assembly Speaker Bakht Jehan Khan on Friday assured local newsmen of his full cooperation during the coverage of the Assembly’s proceeding in future.

Speaking to newsmen here at the Peshawar Press Club, where he came to clarify his position in connection with the Wednesday’s ugly incident, he denied that he had made any negative remarks or tried to humiliate the journalist community.

He said it was his considered opinion that the journalist were playing a role of a watchdog in society to check wrongdoings in power corridors.” I pay much respect to the newsmen working for the betterment of our society,” he added. He deplored the ugly incident of Wednesday and said it was the prime duty of newsmen, being a learned section of society, to take care of the less-educated people.

Earlier, Chief Minister Akram Khan Durrani invited office-bearers of the Khyber Union of Journalists and President of the Press Gallery early in the morning at the Frontier House and urged them to settle the dispute with the NWFP Assembly Speaker and his subordinate staff. The Speaker was also present on the occasion.

After the arrival of the Speaker, along with Secretary of the Assembly, at the press club, the journalists called off their protest march scheduled from the Press Club to the Speaker’s House.
