ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan said on Friday said new tracking system will soon be introduced with the collaboration of police, National Database Registration Authority (Nadra) and Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Sparco), which will be initiated from Islamabad as first phase.

The interior minister said this while addressing the staff of Nadra here at its headquarters. He said non-transparency in financial and administrative affairs of Nadra would not be tolerated.

He said Nadra is sensitive national organisation and important asset, and the government spent billions of rupees on it since the year 2000 and it was now a profitable organisation due to collective hard work of its employees.

Ch Nisar said performance of Nadra employees would be reviewed; however, no employee would be removed from it on political ground. He said a committee formed on the orders of the Supreme Court would appoint its chairman for the first time in the history through an open and transparent procedure.

He expressed dismay at the affairs of the organisation where 8,000 persons were hired in five years of the previous government and hundreds were given jobs in the last few months without any intimation to the Interior Ministry or advertisement in newspapers.

The minister said Nadra employees would not be allowed to interact with foreigners without informing the Interior Ministry. The duty of Nadra officials is to take care of interests of State of Pakistan, he added.

He announced to withdraw 10 percent raise in salaries of Nadra employees that was granted by Brigadier (R) Zahid, who remained on the post of chairman for a brief period. The excessive raise in salaries of some high-level officers would also be reviewed, the minister said, adding, Nadra is using 71 percent of its financial resources on paying salaries.

He said foreign postings by Nadra would be done on merit contrary to past practice of postings based on political affiliation. Its board would manage affairs of the organisation with independence, he remarked. The minister said he wanted Nadra to get its record straight in two weeks time.

Ch Nisar said that a television channel falsely dragged his name and created great hype with totally wrong information about threats to former Nadra chairman. The minister also issued instructions for restoration of the National Hall in the Nadra building where parliamentarians held sessions since 1970s and made the 1973 Constitution.

Earlier, Nadra Chairman Imtiaz Tajwar briefed the minister about operational matters relating to the Authority including national registration programme, innovative utilisation of database as well as major national and international projects.

Responding to a question, the interior minister said that an operation against terrorists’ involved in Mastung massacre has been initiated to eliminate extremists. The stakeholders are being consulted for military operation against groups engaged in terrorist activities, he said.
