New Media regulatory policy soon: PEMRA

ISLAMABAD, April 29 2006: Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) would soonn announce a new media regulatory policy, said PEMRA Chairman Iftikhar Rashid on April 28.

Speaking at a PTV programmes ,Rashid said that the draft of policy had been completed and it would be announced after it was approved by all the stakeholders. He said that Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz had directed PEMRA to issue confronting the country’s media. He said that the policy would determine the future of the country’s media , adding that it would contain all measures that were needed for enhancing the role of Pakistani media.

Responding to a question, he said that 67 satellite channels had been banned because they had not got landing rights and licences from PEMRA . He said that 32 of the banned channels had now applied for landing rights and had been permitted to show their programmes .He denied that there was any other reason involved in banning the channels. “We have no discriminatory law against a specific country , but any channel that wants to air its transmission in Pakistan would have to follow the rules” he said
