Nawa-i-Waqt gets Excellence Award
KARACHI – The Pakistan Advertising Association’s Best Mass Medium of the Year 2004 Award was awarded to daily Nawa-i-Waqt, a publication of the Nida-i-Millat Group, at the 18th Excellence Award ceremony held at a local hotel in Karachi on July 13.
Federal Information Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed was the chief guest. He distributed the awards among the winners.
The Resident Editor, Nawa-i-Waqt, Karachi, Sajjad Mir, received the best award in the print media category on behalf of the Group.
In electronic media, the best mass medium award was given to GEO TV.
Speaking on the occasion, Information Minister Sheikh Rashid said the issue of fixed tax on the advertising agencies would be resolved in a couple of days. The decision has already been taken and the announcement will be made soon, he added.
The minister said he feels sorry for ban on ads to daily Nawa-i-Waqt and daily The Nation. ‘I admit there is my inefficiency but at the same time I would say both the sides are responsible.’ S.H.Hashmi, patron-in-chief of the PAA, speaking on the occasion said the awards, which are distributed every year, have created an environment of competition in the world of advertising. The tradition should continue for healthy growth of advertising in the country, he said.
Hashmi stressed that recently imposed taxes on the advertising agencies should be abolished. He urged the information minister to intervene in the matter and help resolve it. He said the government should revive the advisory committees that existed earlier to get better results. He said the government should use the advertising and PR agencies to get opinion of the different sectors.
Hashmi appreciated the government decision of awarding licences for TV channels to different newspapers. He said it was a good omen that the licences had been issued even to those newspapers that had been criticising the government policies.
He said the TV channels should produce quality programmes to meet the challenges of the modern age.
Mahmood Parekh, Chairman of the PAA 18th Excellence Award Committee, said around 28 awards have been given to 12 advertising agencies which included TV advertisers, corporate advertising, public service advertising, outdoor advertising and electronic media.
He said advertising provides consumers an opportunity to choose the best product. It also sets an environment of competition for the producers and the quality of the products gets better, he said.
Parekh said due to the enhancement of trade relations between Pakistan and India, the concepts of free trade and free access to the market have been emerging which would result in quality production.
He said the objective of the PAA in giving the excellence award is to highlight the best performance and encourage the creators.
He said Pakistan is facing certain future challenges of the WTO and SAFTA. This is the right time that advertising agencies should play more creative role for promotion of trade and industry, he added.
