Nadra issued largest number of CNICs in 2010

Karachi: The National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) issued a record number of Computerized National Identity Cards (CNICs) in 2010.

It has registered 83.094 million citizens so far while it witnessed an unprecedented surge in registration for the year 2010 and as many as 12,253,967 citizens were registered.

Deputy Chairman NADRA Tariq Malik said that it was a record since Nadra’s inception and was a healthy trend signifying awareness among the masses.

Malik highlighted the fact that highest registration in 2010 was a remarkable achievement as Pakistan was going through the worst period of its history and whole country was affected due to the devastating flood resulting in around 20 million displaced people, the world’s largest displacement ever occurred in the history of mankind.

The Nadra’s infrastructure was hit too and the authority had to come up with an innovative approach to help the affected families. Nadra not only achieved this milestone but also helped affected families and issued them 1.4 million Watan Cards to disburse Rs27 billion. NADRA also issued 4,14,245 identity cards to flood victims free of cost.

He said the most prominent feature of registration in the past year was the highest trend among the rural females resulting registration of as many as 3,701,006 womenfolk as compared to registration of 1,993,300 urban females while total 5,694,306 females were registered.

He said during the past years Nadra initiated many measures to increase the registration of womenfolk. He said women’s registration centres in rural areas, staffed by females and mobile registration vans to provide registration services at their doorsteps in far flung areas, played a significant role in increasing the registration.

He said free-o- cost issuance of identity cards to youth attaining the age of 18 years also helped to boost registration. He said Nadra issued total 20,846,698 free CNICs.†

He claimed that rural male registration was also noted to be high in 2010 and total 6,559,661 were registered across the country. He said 4,027,814 in rural while 2,531,847 males in urban areas were registered.

He argued the authority issued 9,12,571 computerised identity cards to disabled and special persons while 11,312,232 CNICs were issued to senior citizens.

He said Nadra took many measures to facilitate the masses at the centres. Senior citizens and special person are being treated on priority basis while people constrained to time due to office hours can avail urgent services through fast track procedure.
