NAB asks accountability court to reopen cases against Sharifs
ISLAMABAD: National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Chairman Admiral (r) Fasih Bokhari has signed an application asking the accountability court to reopen three references against Sharif brothers to contest quashment petition filed by them in the Lahore High Court (LHC) in October 2011.
These cases include Hudaibia Paper Mills, assets beyond known sources of income and Ittefaq Foundry (willful loan default). The proceedings on cases against Sharif brothers were adjourned sine die by an accountability court in 2001 when they were in exile. After their return from Saudi Arabia, NAB filed an application for reopening of the cases in 2007, but the cases were adjourned sine die in 2010 by an accountability court with directions that the trial could be commenced if an application, signed by the NAB chairman, is submitted before the court. The present NAB chairman constituted a special committee to revisit all the cases pending against the politicians. The committee recommended filing of an application under the signature of the chairman for recommencement of these cases.
Bokhari signed the application on the recommendation of a special committee, which was constituted under the supervision of NAB prosecutor general accountability. The committee is now in the process of scrutinising the cases relating to the politicians, and its findings and recommendations would be shared with the media.
