NA speaker praises women MPs
LAHORE: The 16th Speakers and Presiding Officers Conference started at the Punjab Assembly building here on Tuesday.
The two-day annual event is being chaired by National Assembly Speaker Dr Fahmida Mirza, while speakers and presiding officers, their deputies and secretaries of the Senate, all four provincial assemblies and of the AJK and Gilgit-Baltistan assemblies are in attendance.
Dr Mirza urged the delegates to work for the stability and continuity of democracy and encourage women parliamentarians to play their due role.
She also praised the performance of women parliamentarians, saying that 60 per cent of the questions, call attention notices and legislation had been brought by them in the last two years. She said members from minorities should be given a maximum opportunity to express themselves.
Earlier, Punjab Assembly Speaker Rana Muhammad Iqbal welcomed the delegates. They included Senate Deputy Chairman Mir Jan Muhammad Jamali, speakers of Sindh, NWFP, Balochistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly Nisar Khoro, Karamatullah Khan, Aslam Bhutani, Shah Ghulam Qadir, and Wazir Baig and deputy speakers of the provincial assemblies.
The delegates also visited Syed Ali Hajveri’s shrine, Badshahi mosque, mausoleum of Dr Iqbal and Lahore Fort besides witnessing the flag lowering ceremony at Wagah.
