NA echoes with slogans of ‘curbs on Geo unacceptable’

ISLAMABAD: The closure of Geo Super and victimisation of the Jang Group echoed in the National Assembly on Monday when the Leader of the Opposition Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan in his speech condemned the closure of Geo Super, saying his party would continue its protest against such undemocratic actions.

“The government wants permanent closure of the Geo Television channel, making it disappear from the scene,” Nisar Ali Khan said, adding that the PML-N would protest everyday in the National Assembly, which would intensify with the passage of time.

He asked the government to take the House into confidence on the victimisation of Geo TV. “We will resist any move whether it is against Geo TV, ARY channel or any other media organisation,” he said.

Nisar said the opposition would not allow the state organisation like Pemra to be used for victimising a particular television channel. “What big sin they (Geo) have committed to suffer this victimisation,” he asked.

As the opposition leader was delivering his speech, the PML-N members rose on their seats and started chanting slogan ‘Curbs on Geo unacceptable’. “The restrictions on Geo TV are not only undemocratic and without any logic but also shameful,” Nisar said, adding that the country could not be run on the whims of an individual.

The PML-N leader said President Zardari directs his guns at the media whenever he does not like any criticism. “Sometimes he attacks the media and, at other, he resorts to such tactics as being used against Geo,” he said.

He was also critical of Prime Minister Gilani for hesitating to talk on the issue of Geo Super by just saying that the matter was in the court. “The independent media is the voice and beauty of democracy,” Nisar said.
