LAHORE: A delegation from the National Assembly Standing Committee on Human Rights visited Kot Lakhpat jail on Saturday.

The delegation’s chairman, Riaz Fatyana, took personal interest in the improvement of the environment in the jail. He directed the IG prison to take concrete measures to facilitate visitors and inmates.

Fatyana, along with other members of the committee, prepared recommendations to be presented before the national assembly for the overhauling of jails across Pakistan. The recommendations included legal aid for prisoners, provision of a uniform to every prisoner at the time of entry in jail, provision of booklets apprising inmates of their rights and obligations, provision of a computerised medical card for inmates along with a history ticket, installation of a filtration plant on jail premises, regular school education for juvenile prisoners, establishing a female ward in the jail hospital, establishment of a PCO and a utility store in the jail and speedy justice for all prisoners.

While talking to the media, Fatyana asked the administration and judiciary to take serious notice of pending criminal cases. He also stressed the importance of strengthening the system of payroll across Pakistan to overcome overcrowding issues faced by the jails. The chairman urged the concerned quarters to raise the daily wages of prisoners from Rs 42 to at least Rs 100.
