Multinet to launch fibre optic backbone

KARACHI, June 25 2005: Multinet Pakistan of Telekom Malaysia on June 24 announced the launch of its project ‘Ittehad’ – a 4,500 kilometers national fibre optic backbone that will link some 77 cities of Pakistan, according to a statement.

Multinet’s backbone will cater to the needs of the country’s booming telecom sector offering carriers services to mobile phone operators, Long Distance International (LDI) operators, Local Loop (LL) operators, Wireless Local Loop (WLL) companies, broadband service providers, Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and greatly enable and enhance Pakistan’s overall telecommunications infrastructure, the statement maintained.

The said project which is expected to be completed in fourteen months time will bring in $100 million of investment and will result in a highly accessible, fully redundant and resilient DWDM backbone with 20 Gbps operational capacity and 48 cores of dark fiber, added the statement.
