Mother of five burnt to death by husband

By Faraz Khan
KARACHI: A mother of five burnt by her husband succumbed to her injuries during treatment at a hospital on Wednesday.
According to details, Farhat, 40, wife of Danish, was admitted to the Burns Ward of the Civil Hospital, Karachi on March 10 and she passed away on Wednesday. The deceased got married to Danish, her cousin, almost 17 years ago and had four daughters and a son with him. She resided with her husband and children in a house located near the Gujjar Nullah, Nazimabad No 2, within the jurisdiction of Nazimabad police station.
Farhat, in her recorded statement to the police, said, “Since my wedding, my husband and his family were against me. At first, they gave me hell over the births of my two daughters but the issue ended when I gave birth to a son. Then they began taunting and torturing me, accusing me of having illicit relations with someone. I tried to act like nothing was happening and ran the family as per routine to avoid unpleasant incidents but my husband, on the behest of my father-in-law and brother-in-law, frequently tortured me. This incident of burning me was preplanned, as Danish sent the children to his friend’s house before he attacked me. He burned me while I was cooking food in the kitchen. Then he ran outside shouting for help and disappeared.”
Talking to Daily Times, Station Investigation Officer (SIO) Choudhry Bashir said that Danish is an irresponsible person who usually never worked. Farhat was forced to work in different places by Danish and two months before she was burned, Farhat was fired from the factory where she was working.
Bashir further added that the accused fled from the scene after burning her, making the excuse that he was going to arrange a taxi to rush his wife to the hospital and said that his wife was burned while cooking. However, the victim was taken to the hospital by her neighbours. “We have conducted many raids for Danish’s arrest but have been unable to find him,” the SIO explained.
He went on to say that, earlier, an attempt to murder case was registered but that has now been changed to a murder case. “Danish, his father and brother will be arrested,” the SIO assured.
