Minor assault victim suffers acute stress

LARKANA: Samina Bhatti, 11, who was sexually assaulted in Thull, was admitted in the department of psychiatry, Chandka Medical College Hospital, where doctors said on Thursday she has developed acute stress disorder and was kept on anti-depressant and tranquilizers.

The rape victim’s maternal uncle Irshad Ali Bhatti told journalists in the ward that Zakia Bhatti, their neighbour, and the victim were friends and had an experience in making Sindhi caps. On July 17, Zakia asked her to accompany her to get payment for the job they had recently completed.

She refused saying that she would not go as her parents were not in the house, but she insisted and took her to her house. And since then she went missing. We tried to trace her but in vain, he said and added that on July 19, children of the locality informed us that Samina was lying unconscious in front of our house.

“We took her to hospital where she told us that Mumtaz Bhatti, Arif Bhatti ( both junior school teachers) and Jameel Ahmed had raped her. The victim’s maternal cousin Ali Hassan Bhatti, also a junior school teacher, told this correspondent that father of Samina Bhatti, Mumtaz Ali Bhatti, has registered an FIR with Thull police station and nominated Mumtaz Bhatti, Arif Bhatti, Jameel Ahmed Bhatti, Zakia Bhatti and an unknown person under section 376, 337 J and 34 PPC.

Dr Rabia Pathan, medical officer at Thull hospital, who initially examined the patient in her provisional report, had confirmed that Samina was sexually assaulted.

The accused have left then area and moved to Nawabshah to their relatives, said Ali Hassan Bhatti. They have contacted our chief of tribe and pressing for settling the matter through a jirga.

Dr Badar Junejo, head of the department of Psychiatry CMCH, said that there is likelihood of converting the acute stress disorder into post-traumatic stress disorder. It is intense sexual trauma presented with psychogenic fits and fear which could linger on, if developed, for 10 to 20 years. While standing beside her (victim’s bed) with certain intervals, she was crying in broken voice.

When asked where her parents were, Irshad Bhatti, said that they were at home and due to seriousness of the trauma they could not afford to tolerate. Our family is facing intensive mental stress which is further compounded due to life threats from the accused.

Nisar Ahmed Khuhro, Speaker of the Sindh Assembly, had on Wednesday night visited her in the hospital.

A Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) MPA Hargundas, on behalf of MQM chief Altaf Hussain, visited and met her relatives in the hospital.

Deputy Inspector General of Police Larkana, Sanaullah Abbasi, said that the SHO Thull, Sub- Inspector Jawed Jalbani, was suspended while the accused nominated in the FIR, had also moved to Balochistan. We are trying to arrest them.
