Manhandling of journalists flayed

KARACHI (March 13 2008): President Karachi Union of Journalists (KUJ) Khursheed Tanvir, general secretary Khurshid Abbasi, president Karachi Press Club (KPC) Najeeb Ahmed and secretary Imtiaz Khan Faran have severely condemned the roughing up of reporters, cameramen and photographers outside the KPC on Wednesday.

In a statement issued here they said dozens of unknown-armed persons kept the press club surrounded for many hours, and beat up media persons when they came out. A local journalist was also kidnapped and later released, they added.

Senior journalists blamed that ‘jungle rule’ was witnessed in the city, as media personnel were being beaten up, their cameras were snatched and damaged by outlaws, but police besides posing to be a silent spectator earlier, disappeared from the scene.

They demanded a probe into the presence of armed men outside KPC, silence of police and kidnapping of journalist. Action should also be initiated against the unidentified attackers and safety to journalists be ensured, they added. Meanwhile, members of KUJ have decided to hold a demonstration outside Karachi Press Club at 3pm on Thursday (today) to lodge protest against the incident.
