Man kills wife for conceiving girl

Kamran Mansoor

A six months pregnant woman is said to have been murdered by her own husband and father-in-law in the city. Her crime? She had the misfortune to conceive a girl — a crime her husband thought was unpardonable.

On Friday, her husband Asif and father-in-law Hammad Ahmed were arrested by Tamuria police. The incident has come as a shock in an age when such horrible practices are considered a curse of the past.

According to the police, Asif had married 21-year-old Tooba last year. After she had been pregnant for some months, her husband learnt from an ultrasound report that she was going to give birth to a girl — not a boy he expected. On October 1 Asif along with his father opened fire on his wife in their residence (R-1144) situated in Block-15 in the Tamuria police limits, killing her on the spot.

Later, both informed the police and their relatives that unidentified people had murdered Tooba. The police and his relatives took the body to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for legal formalities.

The lady medico-legal officer of the hospital informed the police that the woman had been six months pregnant and killed at point-blank range.

Tooba’s brother Muhammad Umar lodged an FIR (551/11) under Section 302/34 against Asif and his father.

Police officials tasked with investigations into the murder picked up both the accused on Friday. During the initial interrogation, Asif told the police that after his wife had become pregnant he had asked her to get her an ultrasound test done to ascertain the gender of the baby.

He said that when he learnt that his wife was going to deliver a girl he along with his father killed her.
