Man jailed for throwing acid on cousin

KARACHI: A sessions court sentenced a man on Friday to a total of nine years in prison on charges of attacking his female cousin with acid in 2004.

The court found Syed Mohsin Abbas guilty of throwing acid on his teenage cousin with an intention to kill her and causing her other injuries in 2004.

Additional District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Yamin awarded a total of nine years imprisonment — five years under Section 337-L (punishment for other hurt) and four years under Section 324 (attempt to commit qatl-i-amd) of the Pakistan Penal Code — to the convict. However, both the sentences would run concurrently.

The court also imposed a total fine of Rs15,000 and in case of non-payment, the convict would have to undergo an additional nine-month imprisonment.

The court in its verdict observed that the prosecution successfully proved its case against the accused.

According to the prosecution, accused Syed Mohsin Abbas had thrown acid on his cousin in April 2004 since the victim turned down his friendship proposal.

A case was registered against the accused under Sections 324 and 377-L of the PPC at the North Nazimabad police station.

The court extended the benefit of Section 382-B (period of detention to be considered while awarding sentence of imprisonment) of the Cr.PC to the convict.

Although, the convict has already completed his sentence as an undertail, the court did not issue a release order for him since he failed to pay the fine.
