Life becomes miserable for three men for no crime

KARACHI: Absconders involved in the murder of Geo News reporter Wali Khan Babar have been sentenced to death in absentia, while those arrested have been handed down life imprisonment.

Seven important characters of the case have been murdered. However, three persons somehow connected with the case are bearing the brunt of the crime they never committed.Judges security issue aroused when the special Anti-terrorism Court started hearing the case. When this aspect of the case came into the limelight, the judges were provided with security.

As the life of lawyers linked with the case got in danger, one of the lawyers, Arshad Cheema went abroad and got political asylum there, while two lawyers — Muhammad Khan and Mubashar Mirza — dissociated themselves from the case. The security of cops linked with the case was also tightened.

Wali Babar was killed in Liaquatabad. SHO Shafeeq Tanoli played key role during the initial probe. Afterwards, his team performed central role in the arrest of criminals.However, the central character in the case, Liaquat, was killed by Shafeeq Tanoli’s police party in an alleged police encounter at the Sea View. Inspector Tanoli’s brother and his accompanying cop were also killed. On December 20, 2013, a bomb attack was also organised on Shafeeq Tanoli in PIB Colony. Two persons lost their lives and 28 persons including Shafeeq Tanoli got injured.

Though these police officers are performing their duties amid tightened security in Karachi West District, their social life has come to a halt for the last three years. They neither meet their family members nor do they interact with the society. They are living the life of a prisoner.

The other police officer Sub-Inspector Noor Sabir, who assisted the police high-ups in the case, entered challan against criminals in the light of which they were punished.Noor Sabir has been staying at his home for the last 15 months due to security threat and performing duty in the area police station.

Similarly, the third character and prosecutor Abdul Maroof, who remained affiliated with the case despite its transfer from Karachi to Kandhkot, has confined himself to his home and office, dissociating himself from social activities for a couple of years.The police officer has been provided with foolproof security but he still faces life threat.
