LHC throws out plea against 5 ‘N’ women MPAs

LAHORE – The Lahore High Court on Wednesday dismissed a petition seeking disqualification of five PML-N women MPAs with the allegation of possessing bogus BA degrees.

The women MPAs whose eligibility was challenged include Farrah Deeba, Raheela Khadim Hussain, Saima Mohiuddin, Mehmoda Sahi and Shagufta Sheikh.

The petition was filed by Rabiya Ashraf through Tariq Azizi advocate. It was alleged in the petition the women members of the Punjab assembly had bogus BA degrees. The petitioner prayed to the court to declare the respondents disqualified from membership of Punjab assembly.

The petitioner said the respondents were elected MPAs on reserved seats on PML-N tickets but they placed on record fake BA degrees, and by doing this they cheated the election commission.

During proceedings Justice Umar Ata Bandial asked the petitioner counsel whether he had got the degrees of the women PMAs verified from the Punjab University before making allegations. To this question the petitioner’s counsel replied in negative.

The respondentÂ’s counsel told the court the petition was not maintainable because the Supreme Court had declared requirement of BA degree for women MPAs unnecessary. The petitioner had prayed to the court to restrain the five MPAs from participating in the assembly session till the decision on her petition.
