LHC tells media group to stop vilifying police officer

LAHORE: The Chief Justice of Lahore High Court on Friday ordered a media group to stop ongoing harassment and vilification campaign against Regional Police Officer Gujranwala Zulfiqar Ali Cheema. The court passed these orders while hearing a suo motu proceedings into flogging and humiliation of an old man in a village of Gujranwala.

Gujranwala SP Investigation Muhammad Usman told the court that three accused had been arrested while two are still at large. Accused Muhammad Alam, Tanveer, Jahangir, Atif and Nadeem of village Jaboki, Gujranwala criminally trespassed into the house of their opponent Younas. They blackened the face of Younas, made him naked, put chains and dragged in the village to teach him lesson for registering a case of dacoity against them (accused).

The accused persons also insulted the women of the family. The police had also registered another case against the reporter of a media group Shahid Munir on charges of filming the incident again only for the sake of his news channel.

The CJ had already stopped police from harassing the reporter but on Friday additional advocate general Muhammad Hanif Khatana told the court that they have launched a media harassment campaign against RPO that might be stopped. The CJ passed an order in this regard and rose for June 16.
