LHC takes notice of sale of 16-year-old girl in Faisalabad

LAHORE: Justice Muhammad Ahsan Bhoon of the Lahore High Court (LHC), while taking notice of the reported sale of a 16-year-old girl Ume Kulsoom from Faisalabad to a 62-year-old man, has summoned the people involved and a police official in the first week of July.

The ‘sale’ was brought to the court’s notice during the hearing of a petition by Kulsoom and her paternal uncle Aslam, seeking the quashing of a theft case.

Haji Khalil Ahmad, the 62-year-old man, had lodged the theft case against Kulsoom and Aslam. The judge asked Khalil how he was married to a 16-year-old girl. Khalil disclosed that he had paid Rs 0.4 million to one of her maternal uncles, Waris.

The judge wondered how the crime was brought to the notice of the police, but no action was taken. The judge was surprised that Khalil had confessed to buying the girl, but the police did not take any action.

The judge, while ordering that the theft case be quashed, ordered the ‘buyer’, Waris and the investigating officer of the theft case to appear before the court.
