LHC restores APNS appeal

LAHORE – The Lahore High Court has restored the intra-court appeal of the All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS) that challenged the sixth wage award for journalists and other newspaper employees.

The appeal was dismissed on April 17 this year for non-prosecution. It was revived after an application in the high court filed by advocate Abdul Hafiz Peerzada on behalf of 21 members of the APNS, which challenged the judgment of Justice Malik Muhammad Qayyum (no longer on the bench) delivered on Sept 12, 1997. The judgment declared on March 13, 1997, that the wage award was valid and directed the APNS to enforce a raise in wages.

The APNS filed an intra-court appeal against the judgment, which was subsequently processed by a division bend’ comprising Justice M. Javed Buttar and Justice Mohammad Muzammil Khan. The bench dismissed the appeal as the APNS had failed to pursue it. The society filed an application for its revival last week and the court accepted the plea. The intra-court appeal has been fixed before the division bench, which will hear it next week.
