Lawyers boycott courts to protest police brutality

The legal fraternity boycotted court proceedings on Saturday to protest against law-enforcement agencies attitude towards lawyers during their weekly demonstration on Thursday.

The call for observing Saturday as black day and complete boycott was given by the provincial bar associations across the country. The legal representatives in the city courts had organized a procession on Thursday and had been baton-charged and teargassed as a result.

Many were injured, and several were arrested. Saturday’s boycott was in retaliation to this brutality. However, litigants were brought in and the cases were adjourned to the next date due to non-appearance of the lawyers. The oath-commissioners, stamp vendors and photostat shops were not functioning either.
