Lawmakers voice concern over Manchar Lake pollution

Pakistan Press Foundation

Karachi: Lawmakers expressed serious concern during the provincial assembly session on Tuesday over the discharge of toxic waste into Manchar Lake.

During a question hour on issues concerning the fisheries department, Fisheries Minister Jam Khan Shoro evaded the opposition lawmakers’ queries on whether the water of Manchar Lake was fit for human consumption or not. “It’s not the purview of the fisheries department to check and verify quality of the lake water and certify it fit for human consumption.”

The minister, however, said the pollution level and salinity in the water of Manchar Lake had considerably decreased following the discharge of water from Indus River into the lake, improving the fish breeding there.
