Law to take its course if Prime Minister doesn’t appear on 27th: Supreme Court
ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court was informed on Thursday that the government was seriously deliberating implementing the court’s verdict in the NRO (National Reconciliation Ordinance) case while Justice Asif Saeed Khan Khosa warned that even though nobody wanted to derail the democratic system, if the prime minister failed to appear before the court on August 27, the law would take its course.
A five-member special bench comprising Justice Khosa, Justice Sarmad Jalal, Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan, Justice Gulzar Ahmed and Justice Athar Saeed heard the government’s review petition against its July 12 order on the NRO verdict implementation.
Continuing his arguments, Attorney General Irfan Qadir submitted before the court that he had held a meeting with the prime minister in which the law minister was also present. He said during the meeting, matters pertaining to the NRO case verdict’s implementation were discussed in detail and it was decided that more time should be sought from the court to hold purposeful consultations on the issue. The attorney general contended that the government was seriously looking into the matter and would consult other concerned people to resolve the issue. He also sought more time.
Justice Khosa, however, toldthe attorney general that while he made tall promises, he never acted on them. “You have time till August 27; the prime minister has been summoned and hence you should ensure implementation of the court’s order on NRO before August 27,” Justice Khosa said.
Meanwhile, Law Minister Farooq H Naek also appeared before the court and submitted that the government did not want confrontation among institutions and sought some time to be able to hold consultations with party stalwarts for an amicable resolution of the issue. The attorney general also sought extra time from the court.
The court adjourned the hearing till date in office, ruling that adjourning the case for an indefinite period did not mean a stay order in the NRO verdict’s implementation. Justice Khosa said that summoning the PM on August 27 was a separate issue.
