Lahore High Court orders Hajj quota be given only to taxpayers

LAHORE: Lahore High Court (LHC) Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial on Thursday directed the Religious Affairs Ministry to grant Hajj quota to only those Hajj group organisers (HGOs) which had paid taxes, and remove the names of defaulters from the quota list.
The chief justice, while disposing of a petition of three HGOs, directed the ministry to allot quota to eligible tour operators only and remove the names of those operators from the list of eligible applicants who did not pay income tax.

The chief justice also ordered allocation of Hajj quota among the petitioners if they were not income tax defaulters.

The petitioners, Imran and others, submitted through their counsel that they duly paid their income tax but the ministry declared them ineligible for Hajj quota and also denied clearance certificates to them. The petitioners said they approached the ministry time and again but their grievance was not addressed.

They requested the court to order the ministry to award them Hajj quota for being eligible tour operators.
