Lahore High Court gives ministry 24 hours to implement order

LAHORE: The chief justice of the Lahore High Court on Tuesday ordered the Ministry of Religious Affairs to allot quota to new Haj Group Organisers (HGOs) within 24 hours and submit a compliance report of the order.

Following the court notices, Religious Affairs Secretary Azam Samma, Additional Secretary Muhammad Arshad, Joint Secretary Sher Ali and other officials appeared before the court. Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial warned the officials to avoid creating hurdles to allotment of quota to the HGOs.

The chief justice observed that Supreme Court and high court had ordered the ministry to distribute quota among all eligible new tour operators but the ministry’s officials didn’t bother to obey judicial orders.

Many new Haj tour operators had filed contempt petitions against the ministry’s officials for not obeying the court orders for allotment of Haj quota to them on merit. The ministry officials, led by the secretary, appeared and assured the court that they would comply with the court orders.
