The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation will help the Lahore College for Women University to develop its premises into a green campus under a United Nations Environment Programme Project. The announcement came in a seminar on Monday by climatologist and hydrologist Shahbaz Khan. He is the Director of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation’s Cluster Office in Jakarta and the Regional Bureau for Science in Asia and the Pacific; serving as its representative.

The Environment Science Department arranged the seminar to mark the Earth Day. He said a green university network was a functional network of higher education institutions that would incorporate environment, low-carbon-climate resilience development strategies and sustainability aspects in their education, training, campus operations and enhanced student engagement.

“The networks are envisaged to also develop capacity to assist universities in mainstreaming the greening universities toolkit into their day-to-day functions through the Green Campus,” he added. In her address, Vice Chancellor Doctor Uzma Qureshi said, “Through this joint venture, the university staff and students will be provided with a selection of strategies, tools and resources, gleaned from the literature, from global case studies and from practice for establishing green, resource-efficient and low-carbon campuses.”
