KARACHI – International Centre for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), Karachi University and PI Pakistan on Thursday inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to launch a internet and cable-based “Free Education TV” at Latif Ebrahim Jamal National Science Information Center, Karachi University.

It will offer 16,000 educational courses of different levels from kindergarten to higher education.
The free education TV, which is only one of its kinds in the world, is being launched first time in Pakistan under the Virtual Education Project Pakistan, a project of Higher Education Commission. Course levels, offered by the TV, are ascribed as school level, college level and university level so that undergraduate, graduate or postgraduate students can get access to the lectures of their own level.

The signing ceremony of a Memorandum of Understanding was held at the Director’s Room of HEJ, Research Institute of Chemistry, KU. ICCBS Director Prof Dr Iqbal Chaudhry, on behalf of his institution, and PI Pakistan Chairman Javaid Pasha signed the agreement. On the occasion, former chairman HEC Prof Dr Attaur Rehman, Haider Raza Mehdi and other dignitaries were also present.

It is pertinent to mention here that Virtual Education Project Pakistan is being run under the supervision of Prof Attaur Rehman, while the said Free Education TV is also a brain child of Prof Attaur Rehman.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Atta said the setup of this useful TV was indeed a great achievement of the ICCBS that would help students broaden their educational and research vision as per international scenario. Talking about the VEPP, he said that the VEPP was working under the patronage of HEC through which lectures/courses were relayed nationwide in various universities and other higher education institutes.

“The Free Education TV is unique in its type in the world, which is offering 16,000 educational courses at different levels. However, the launch of this programme in Pakistan will definitely initiate a golden period in the educational activities of the country. Though many websites are available for the purpose but video lectures for the courses are available on You Tube which cannot be accessed easily in Pakistan as it has been blocked, students found difficulty in viewing and downloading these lectures, so as a solution Virtual Education Project Pakistan of HEC has initiated an Online Education Web Project (OEWP).

The OEWP indulge in the free video lecture courses at different levels ie, Kindergarten, Undergraduate, Graduate. All the categories will be downloaded as basic sciences, social sciences, and life sciences. Anyone can get access to the required field of studies. The videos will be played 24 hours a day, which will be a beneficial step for the students,” he said.
Dr Atta added that now students will able to attend the quality courses of internationally famous universities, like Stanford University. Dr Iqbal Chaudhry said, “Today is the historic day in the country when a MoU is being inked to give our nation free access to eminence courses of various sciences through a internet and cable-based Free Education TV.

He said that the TV would finally be launched in the next few weeks. He said, “The ICCBS has become the largest and finest institutions in this region. In last two years, we increased our PhD enrolment from 310 to 480, expanded our international collaboration with 26 new MoUs, welcomed over 180 foreign scholars from some 50 nations, published over 600 international research papers, patented 20 new findings internationally and established several new institutions.”

Javaid Pasha and Haider Raza Mehdi appreciated the great efforts of Prof Rehman, who brought about revolution in the higher education sector. They said that ICCBS was a state-of-the-art research establishment in the country.
