Karachi to have Information Technology (IT) varsity by year-end

KARACHI- Large campus based IT university in Karachi will become operational by December 2001.

This was stated by Shahid Firoz, Vice Chairman Economic Development Council.

In the first phase, he said, a space of about 130,000 sq feet is being dedicated for the faculty.

The construction of building for centrally located campus will be completed by September this year, he said adding that the university will be equipped with state of the art equipment and infrastructure.

An agreement for the setting up of the faculty was reached during an extensive session held at the Governor House between a team from the Ministry of Science and Technology, headed by Federal Minister Dr. Atta-ur-Rehman who was assisted Secretary of the Ministry Abu Shamim Arif, Salman Ansari and others.

The Sindh Government side was led by Governor Mohammadmian Soomro, Finance Minister Dr. Abdul Hafeez Shaikh besides Shahid Firoz, Shahzadn Shaikh, Brig Akbtar Zamin and some members of the Sindh IT Board.

The Ministry of Science and Technology agreed to provide all the resources for speedy commissioning and start of the University.

Shahid Firoz said that establishment of the University will not only fulfill a long standing demand of students of Karachi but will also provide an impetus to the Sindh Government efforts to promote Karachi as hub of IT in the region.

The Vice-Chairman EDC said that there are several other initiatives under way to be revealed over the next few weeks as part of government efforts for revival of economy of Urban Sindh.
