KARACHI: Protesters burned a Danish flag in Karachi on Thursday in a show of anger over the reprinting of a caricature of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), witnesses said.

Around 50 members of a hardline Islamic student group took to the streets after several Danish newspapers published the caricature that caused bloody riots in the Muslim world two years ago.

“We will not shy from sacrificing our lives to protect the sanctity of our Prophet (PBUH),” a participant in the rally, who did not give his name, told AFP. The participants chanted slogans against President Musharraf and US President George Bush and criticised the government for not taking up the issue with Danish authorities.

Authorities said they had stepped up security at the diplomatic missions of Denmark and other Western nations, as well as at Danish business interests. “We have tightened security for all the diplomatic missions here in Karachi,” said Arif Ahmed Khan, the senior official in the Sindh Home Department. Five people died in Pakistan in February 2006 during violent protests against the caricatures. afp
