Kaira assures APNS of payment of long pending dues

KARACHI: The information minister has assured the APNS that the payment of long pending dues of the government advertisements will be made shortly and the process will be completed within a fortnight, said a press release of the APNS on Thursday.

Qamar Zaman Kaira, speaking at the meeting of the Executive Committee of the APNS in Islamabad, assured the APNS that the Ministry of Information was keen to clear the dues at the earliest, but due to snags in the verification process, the payments could not be made before March 1, as already assured to the APNS. However, he requested the APNS to advise the advertising agencies to cooperate with the PID and complete documentations for verification. The information minister also elaborated the observations of the ministry on the proposed draft of the Advertising Policy presented by the APNS and stated that the ministry agreed with the aims and objectives as well as the principles of the advertisement distribution system, as outlined in the draft, but there were some implementation problems, which could be sorted out with the APNS in an exclusive meeting.

Dr Jabbar Khattak, Secretary-General APNS, stated that the Executive Committee of the All Pakistan Newspapers Society held its meeting in Islamabad under the chairmanship of its President, Mujib-ur-Rahman Shami, wherein the matters relating to dues against the federal government and the advertisement distribution system were discussed. The Executive Committee has decided that if the dues are not cleared as assured, the APNS shall be constrained to suspend all the advertisements released by the PID.

The secretary-general also announced that the Executive Committee had also decided to hold its Annual General Council Meeting on Wednesday, March 31, 2010, in Karachi. The members have unanimously adopted the annual report of the society for the year 2008-09. The members appreciated the efforts of the office-bearers and the Secretariat for efficiently performing the duties and handling the problems faced by the newspaper industry.

The APNS Executive Committee has noted that certain reforms are required to update and improve the APNS Constitution and in this regard, a committee has been formed under Mujib-ur-Rahman Shami to prepare recommendations, which will be placed before the Extra-Ordinary General Body of the society. The committee consists of Hameed Haroon, Syed Faseih Iqbal, Muhammad Aslam Kazi, Dr Jabbar Khattak, Arshad A Zuberi, Kazi Asad Abid, Syed Sarmad Ali, Jamil Ather, Mehtab Khan and Syed Ayaz Badshah.

The Executive Committee considered the applications for membership and decided to grant associate membership to the applicant publications subject to recommendation by the Distribution, Wholesale and Retail Marketing Committee. The Executive Committee also granted provisional accreditation to M/s Modem 4 (Pvt) Ltd, Lahore; M/s Mint Idea House (Pvt) Ltd, Lahore; and M/s MHN Communications, Lahore.

The members of the Executive Committee offered Fateha on the sad demise of Rafiq-ur-Rahman Saifi of the Daily Saadat, Faisalabad.
