Kainat Soomro case hearing

KARACHI: Six people recorded their statements before the District and Sessions Judge (DSJ), South, Faheem Ahmed Siddiqui, on Wednesday with regard to the incident that took place last month during proceedings of the Kainat Soomro’s gang-rape case in the court of the Additional District and Session Judge, Nizar Ali Khawaja.

All stated that family members of the accused had threatened them with dire consequences unless they disassociated themselves from the case.

In the last week of May, when the Judge was to announce the verdict regarding bail application of one of the accused, Shaban Shaikh, his family members and friends allegedly started hooliganism and attempted to attack the Deputy-District Public Prosecutor (DDPP), representatives of NGOs and even tried to browbeat the judge.

Sensing the gravity of the situation, the Judge adjourned the case and took shelter in his chamber and referred the case to the Sindh High Court to be transfered elsewhere.

The Advocates in the Kainat Soomro case wrote to the Chief Justice of the Sindh High Court (CJSHC) demanding an inquiry to be conducted against those who attempted to sabotage the proceedings.

The Sindh High Court formed an inquiry committee and appointed DSJ Faheem Ahmed Siddiqui to conduct an inquiry into the incident.

On Wednesday, six persons recorded their statements which included, DDPP Abdul Maroof, two representatives of a non-governmental organisation (NGO), WAR, Asiya and Advocate Farida Moton.

The counsel of Kainat Soomro, have written to the CJSHC to personally intervene in the matter demanding action against the accused. The DJ, after listening to the statement, sent the report to CJSHC for his perusal.
