Journalists walk out of NWFP Assembly

PESHAWAR: Journalists covering proceedings of the NWFP Assembly walked out of the assembly proceedings on Thursday to protest against the expulsion of their colleagues from a Peshawar Urdu daily and non-payment of salaries in local newspapers for the last several months.

Led by Khyber Union of Journalists President Syed Bukhar Shah and Press Gallery President Shahid Hamid, the journalists complained against the expulsion of journalists without serving them any show-cause notice and non-payment of salaries for the last several months at a time when the prices of all the daily-use items have witnessed 100 percent increase.

They also apprised Minister for Information Mian Iftikhar Hussain of the existing miserable condition of journalists in some local papers. They asked the government to stop government advertisements to those papers that were not paying salaries to its employees. They asked the minister to link issuance of advertisements with the implementation of the Wage Board Award.

They also demanded immediate reinstatement of sacked colleagues to remove the unrest in the journalist community. After getting assurance from the information minister, the journalists ended their boycott.
