Journalists to stage sit-in before Senate session today

ISLAMABAD, Feb 15: Journalists will stage a sit-in outside the Parliament House before start of the Senate session on Monday evening to protest against the attitude of police and security personnel.

The journalists, who boycotted the Senate proceedings on Friday due to misbehaviour of police officials at the main entrance of the parliament building, have decided to continue their protest till the government took action against the responsible police officials.

It may be mentioned that no one from the treasury benches came to the press gallery to inquire about the reason for boycotting the Senate’s proceedings on Friday. Moreover, after adjournment of the session, Senate Chairman Mohammedmian Soomro constituted a three-member committee to probe into the incident.

According to an official handout, the committee held a meeting on Saturday and sought details of the incident. Interestingly, the committee members finalized their recommendations without inviting any journalist to the meeting and after hearing only the point of view of the police and security personnel.

This was the second time in the recent past that the journalists staged a walkout from the press gallery due to the police attitude. Many senior journalists said they had never witnessed such security arrangements in the Parliament House in the past.
