Journalist’s son among three killed in Hangu attack

HANGU: Three persons, including the son of a journalist, were killed and four others sustained injuries when three motorcyclists opened fire on a van near the Sports Stadium here Sunday, police officials said.

Talking to reporters, District Police Officer Abdur Rasheed said Pir Kamal Shah, father of the former chairman of the District Coordination Council and Nazim Union Council Kach, Pir Amir Faisal, along with his grandson Asim Mehmood and other relatives was on his way to the market when three motorcyclists opened fire on their double cabin van (MT-988) on the Hangu-Thall Road at 9 a.m.

Three persons identified as Pir Kamal Shah, Asim Mehmood and guard Noor Khan were killed on the spot while four others sustained injuries. The injured included Nadir Khan, Rehmatullah, Syed Anwar and policeman Akhtar Mehmood. Asim Mehmood was the only son of Syed Hassan Mehmood, president of the Orakzai Press Club.

Taking prompt action, the police party chased the gunmen and arrested one of them after an exchange of fire. The detained gunman was identified as Muhammad Ghani son of Said Rehman, a resident of Tirah valley in Khyber Agency currently residing in Sarkdana village of Hangu district.

The police also seized motorcycle (BUG-2931) used in the crime and said the accused had links with the militants Two accomplices of the arrested militant, however, managed to escape from the scene.

The dead and the injured were shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital in Hangu. The sources said six more suspects including the owner of the motorcycle used in the crime were also taken into custody. Meanwhile, the district coordination officer imposed Section 144 in the district keeping in view the precarious security situation.
