Journalists Rights Front elects officials

LAHORE, March 02, 2006: Over 50 members of the newly set up Journalists Rights Front (JRF) met at the Lawrence Garden on Wednesday March 2 to elect its office bearers.

The front is aimed at securing membership of the Lahore Press Club for journalists who meet the criteria. Up to 131 journalists have joined the front so far.

The meeting that continued for an hour elected Reehan Aslam Paracha of The Post the JRF president and Muhammad Bilal Ghauri of daily Insaaf the general secretary. The governing body consists of Ahsan Raza, Muhammad Abdullah, Syed Sadaqat Shah, Arshad Shafiq, Shahab Jaffri, Athar Rasool, Zulqarnain Tahir and Mohsin Naseem.

Ghauri briefed the meeting and said that the front would confront people who were exploiting working journalists. He said the front would continue its efforts “until and unless it gets legitimate rights for its members”.

Speaking on the occasion, Paracha said the front had no political ends to gain and it was set up only to get their due rights. He said the front would not step back unless its demands were met.
