Journalists protest police maltreatment

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Union of Journalists on Friday staged a protest demonstration to denounce police high-handedness against journalists in Gujranwala and Islamabad and security forces’ firing on a media team in Malakand.

Similar demos were arranged across the country on the call of Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists. The protesting journalists demanded of the government to take stern action against those involved in the torture of media persons in Gujranwala and Islamabad. They also demanded inquiry into the security forces’ firing on the journalists in Malakand and those responsible for it should be punished.

The protesting journalists staged a demo outside Peshawar Press Club. The journalists were holding placards inscribed with slogans seeking protection. They were also chanting slogans.

Speaking on the occasion, KhUJ president Mohammad Riaz strongly condemned the authorities and media owners for taking no action for protection of the journalists.

He said that the working journalists were performing their duties in the most dangerous situation, while no security measures are taken for their protection. The journalists after the demonstration dispersed peacefully.
