Journalists protest police baton charge

ISLAMABAD: The journalistÂ’s community of Rawalpindi and Islamabad on Wednesday staged a demonstration and demanded action against police baton-charge on them during a protest rally.

Rawalpindi/Islamabad Union of Journalist (RIUJ) organised the rally. A large number of journalists participated in it. The rally started from National Press Club (NPC) and culminated at in front of Parliament House. The journalists were holding placards and banners inscribed with slogans related to freedom of media.

Federal Union of Journalists President Pervez Shaukat and NPC General Secretary Afzal Butt addressing the rally strongly condemned the police action against peaceful rally of journalists on Tuesday.

They threatened that if government took no action against the police they would establish a protest camp in front of Parliament House.

Minister for Information Qamar Zaman Kaira speaking on this occasion said strict action would be taken against the police officials who resorted to baton-charge on journalists. A committee under the chairmanship of Deputy Commissioner (DC) Islamabad has been constituted for the investigation of the incident and they would give report regarding the incident in 24 hours, he said.
