Journalist’s house attacked with hand grenades

Peshawar: Unidentified persons lobbed two hand grenades at the house of journalist Nasrullah Afridi on 26 May 2007, damaging the boundary wall and veranda.

Afridi, the correspondent for the daily “Mashriq” in the tribal Khyber Agency, was publicly threatened the previous week by a leader of Lashkar-i-Islam, a militant Islamic organisation. Fortunately no one was injured in the attack.
Afridi had moved from the Khyber Agency to Peshawar, the capital city of the North West Frontier Province, in 2006 after receiving threats from the same militant group. In a criminal complaint filed with the local police, Afridi held Lashkar-i-Islam militants responsible for the attack, stating that the group had threatened to kill him during a 21 May broadcast on its pirate FM radio station.
The Tribal Union of Journalists (TUJ) protested the attack on Afridi’s house and demanded the immediate arrest of the attackers.
Afridi said he may again have to move to another city as he and his family no longer felt safe even in the provincial capital city of Peshawar.
