Journalist murdered in broad daylight

MIRPURKHAS- A Thar-based journalist was murdered in broad daylight in Shadi Large town in the afternoon. Soofi Muhammad Khan, correspondent of daily “Ummat” was shot dead in a main city area, Shadi Large Mori by a person identified as Ayaz Pathan and his accomplices.

Soofi received several bullet injuries and died on the spot. After the case was lodged by deceased’s brother Rehmat Khan, police arrested accused Ayaz and four others and recovered a pistol, which was used in the murder of the journalist.

SSP Badin Nasir Khan told that Soofi had developed a rift with the accused and when he saw a news item against him, the accused got furious and shot dead the reporter. Sources said the accused himself surrendered to police.

The late journalist did numerous investigative stories regarding women trafficking in Thar. He was constantly receiving death threats and a few months back some unknown people had attempted to kill him in which he was injured. However no one was arrested in this connection.

In an emergent meeting of local journalists, the murder was strongly condemned. The meeting, which was well attended by the members of Mirpurkhas press club and union of journalists, called upon the authorities to ascertain the real cause of the murder. They demanded exemplary punishment to the accused.

According to a Hyderabad correspondent the murder comes a day before the International Day of Press Freedom that is on May 3rd. Soofi, 45, has left behind a widow and nine children.
