Journalist moves court to become party

ISLAMABAD: A journalist on Saturday moved a petition in the Supreme Court to becoming a party in the dual nationality case.

Dr Shahid Masood has filed the application through his counsel Akram Sheikh. The applicant also submitted relevant material in this regard. The court has given last opportunity to Interior Minister Rehman Malik to submit proof into renunciation of his UK citizenship by June 4.

The petitioner quoted the preamble of the constitution, which says, “Whereas the sovereignty over the entire universe belongs to Almighty Allah alone, and the authority to be exercised by the people of Pakistan within the limits provided by Him is a sacred trust, wherein the state shall exercise its powers and authority through the chosen representatives of the people.

He said that this part of the preamble unequivocally demonstrates that the chosen representatives are “trustees of the state powers” as such have to come up clean and true to the level of “trustee” for discharging his “trust obligations”. The citizenship of any other country brings about inherent conflict of interest and disqualifies and disables the “repository of a trust power” to discharge his obligations honestly and truly.
